I was born in 1940 in a small middle Georgia town. Since that time, I have lived through one world war, the Korean war, Vietnam war and the Cold war, to name a few. My great-grandfather fought for the Confederacy in the Civil War. My own military career began after the close of the Koran conflict and at the beginning of the Cold War and the Vietnam war. I joined the U.S. Army in 1957 and received my discharge in 1965.
President-elect Barack Obama is not a communist. He is not a Marxist. He is not a socialist. He is not anti-American. He is not a terrorist. He is not dangerous. He is not going to take away your precious guns. The right-wingers in this country are still calling him these names and harping on these stupid issues. They are like rabid animals with crazy talk radio leading the pack.
Mr. Holden, you can protest all you want about your lack of bias in favor of Barack Obama in your paper, but we know better. I have personally written two letters during the heat of the campaign, protesting/highlighting obvious bias in your news coverage, but alas, they never found the light of day in publication. They were critical, but certainly not offensive! Other letters were somehow delayed till their relavency was outdated or lost! Indeed, the ones not published were sent directly to Dusty Nix. I am copying him on this one! If you would like copies, I will oblige.
An article in Sunday’s paper disturbs me greatly. I’m not familiar with Joe Galloway and don’t care to be. His rantings are way over the top and not based in fact. He blames everything on the Republicans when in fact many of our problems are from Dems. The entire Congress and government have had a hand in this debacle.
We have been subscribers to your paper since 1973. My father wrote for your paper in the ‘60s and was proud of it.
My father and I are appalled at the decision of Chuck Leonard to make a racist comment on a radio station instead of during the TV morning show while seated next to African Americans Cheryl Renee and Bruce Lee.
During the recent presidential election cycle, I heard parents of college students speaking on several television news shows. These parents were amazed that their children were voting for Barack Obama. They were shocked because Barack Obama did not share the conservative values the students were exposed to as they were growing up.
The movie “Dumb & Dumber” has taken over politics and common sense.
Senator Barack Obama will become the 44th president of the United States. Dr. King’s dream has finally come to pass. It has taken us 400 plus years to get here, but we’ve made it. My grandmother cried because she thought that she didn’t think she would ever live to see this day.
The forty-mile resurfacing of Interstate 185 will soon be completed. This has been a very successful project and one which is extremely important to Columbus and our entire region.
If Rev. Howell were as concerned about our soldiers and civil service workers in Iraq and Afghanistan as he is for murderers, rapists, thieves and druggies, he would serve our country better. Badmouthing Sheriff Johnson when he had not been inside the jail for nine years is poor politics. Johnson has done a great job running the Sheriff’s Department.
Court ruling a sick joke I just read that a stay of execution had been granted for convicted killer Troy Davis, convicted of killing a police officer in Savannah in 1989. I believe that is almost 20 years ago, and yet now he is getting all this support for clemency from Jimmy Carter and, according to the AJC, people around the United States.

I would personally like to thank the candidates who attended our NAMI (National Alliance for the Mentally ill) forum Sunday afternoon. What a heartwarming feeling it is to know that there is a place in their campaigns now, and serving if elected, for the mentally ill. Mental illnesses are common and highly treatable, yet millions (and many from our own area) struggle because they cannot get treatment.
I am writing in regard to the stolen bronze deer on Green Island Drive. If my memory is correct, this is the third time the deer has been stolen. All that is left now is the platform and one mangled leg.
I am somewhat amazed that no one has mentioned the single most causative factor in the U.S. financial meltdown, the cost of gasoline. That single item impacts everyone’s pocketbook and restricts everyone’s ability to purchase new products by forcing the price of all consumer goods up.
